Stirling Comets Team Selection and Grading Policy 2021

The Stirling Comets Netball Club (SCNC) aims to form teams that have a balanced group of players of similar ability across all playing positions. We endeavour to place players in the team best suited to their skill level, ability and potential.

The SCNC aims to ensure player selection is conducted fairly and effectively, and that its outcome is in the best interests of the whole club and its players.

Players are expected to train with their team regularly (at least 90% of trainings). If a registering player is unable to meet this commitment, we ask you to notify the Convener, as this may impact team placement.

General Process

The Selection Process will consist of two grading sessions for junior grades and one for seniors. After this time, teams will be confirmed via email.

Selection Criteria

  • A player’s overall skill level including: footwork, ball handling, attacking and defending skills, perception and cognition skills, fitness including speed and agility, discipline as a team player.
  • Sportsmanship and attitude
  • Availability to attend team training sessions
  • Player’s online registration and payment of fees by the due date.

Considerations

  • The club aims to form teams of no fewer than 8 players and no more than 10 players
  • Teams will be selected based on the need for a range of balanced players, hence a combination of goalies, midcourt and defence players.
  • The selection panel will consider the number of players registered with the club within each age group in determining whether a player/s may need to play out of their age group to fill teams.
  • Requests from players to trial outside of their age group should be made to the Convener (see Communications to the Selection Panel below) in advance of trials so that we can schedule accordingly (note players must also trial in their age group). Additionally, the club may request a player to trial and/or play out of their age group. Being placed in a team out of age group will be at the discretion of the selection panel.
  • Should a player request to play with a friend/s, it will be at the discretion of the selection panel to decide whether it’s beneficial to the player/s concerned, the affected team and the club as a whole.

Other Guidelines

  • Teams will be selected based on the selection criteria and the considerations.
  • Under 9 teams are non-competitive (no finals) and requests to play with friends will be accommodated where possible.
  • In all other age groups (under 11 through to Seniors), the teams will be selected based on the selection criteria and the considerations. Age groups/divisions with only one team are not required to trial.
  • The selection panel will be appointed by the SCNC Committee and will consist of suitably experienced club members and/or independent selectors. There will be au least 3 selectors assessing divisions in juniors and at least 3 selectors assessing the seniors as a group.
  • Selectors will be independent to the players trialling for teams wherever possible.
  • In the event that there is a family connection to a player trialling, the relevant selector will not provide feedback with respect to that player, and they will stand down from that particular player’s selection and any discussion surrounding them. In this situation, the Convener will be available to participate in conversations in their place and discuss that player’s selection with the remaining members of the selection panel as required.

Items of Note

  • All players who register by the cut-off date will be offered a place in a team.
  • Late registrations will be considered in teams/divisions with an inadequate number of players, but a place is not guaranteed.
  • Players are asked to register prior to trials wherever possible to enable more effective scheduling of the trial sessions.
  • Due to the varied demand of trialling in some positions over other positions, equal court time cannot be guaranteed. Players can expect to trial at least once in each of their preferred positions in each trial session they attend. Players may also be asked to take the court in other positions during the trial process.
  • Players unable to attend any of the trial sessions will be placed in a team, based upon netball experience, player history and prior season performance (if known).
  • Players who register after trials have been conducted may need to be placed in a team that is not optimally aligned to their abilities.
  • Nominated trial positions provide no guarantee of the actual position the player will necessarily play in their assigned team once teams are confirmed; the coach will position players based on team needs.
  • SCNC reserves the right to amend the selection criteria when necessary.
  • SCNC reserves the right to invite Independent Selectors from outside the Association to assist with the selection process.
  • All selection decisions of the selection panel are final.

Communications to the Selection Panel

  • All enquiries regarding player selection (pre and post-selection) should be made to the SCNC Selection Convener.
  • In the event that a player has a specific request that impacts their decision to play or trial for the club, it should be raised to the SCNC Selection Convener. A request will be taken into consideration, but there is no guarantee it will be fulfilled if it’s not deemed in the best interest of the club, team and/or players by the Selection Panel.
  • The SCNC Selection Convener will liaise with the Selection Panel on behalf of players.
  • The 2021 SCNC Selection Convener is Lisa Nairn.
